'Dennis'

I make a telephone call. “Hello Dennis, it’s Marlene. Can I come over to see you tomorrow?"
"O.K. I’ll see you then”.
I arrive at the house after lunch, the window is open, and he is in the kitchen, I call to him and he replies “come in love, the door is open”.
I go in and he is just putting on his shoes.
“I am just going to put some food out for the birds in the back garden, would you like to come?”
I follow him carefully from the kitchen, through the hall, utility room and into the garage, out of the door, down a side path to the patio.
“Ah” he exclaims, “this is the hedge, which I hold onto and at the bottom I know a few paces in front of me is the bird table”
I watch this man with so much admiration as he puts the bread onto the table. He whistles and waits.
He tells me the sun is shining, he can feel the warmth on his face and the sheep are in the field, “I can hear them” he states.
I hear a bird chirp and Dennis smiles, “the robin is here" he says, and yes the robin was on the fence.

I felt humbled; Dennis is 90 years old and blind.
He lives with his disabled wife.
